Pasadena Firefighter Shana Welch will be inducted into the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Hall of Fame on April 29 on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.

A native of Larksville, PA., Shana is the second University of Michigan player in the league’s Hall of Fame. She was a member of their All-Decade Team competing during the 2004-2007 season and is the only three-time CWPA Most Valuable Player in the school’s history. She was the CWPA Rookie of the Year in 2005 and currently stands as the only women’s player to sweep all of the major awards she was eligible for over a four-year span. Additionally, she established new program records for career goals and points, served as Captain of the Wolverines for two seasons and was the recipient of numerous awards and record setting personal and school points/goals.

After graduation, Shana played professionally with the UWA Perth Comets in Australia for one year. She returned to Michigan as a strength and conditioning intern before joining Bucknell’s swimming team as an Assistant Coach from 2008-2009. She returned to water polo from 2009-2010 as an Assistant Coach at Harvard before heading to Greece to play professionally again.

“We are very proud of Shana as she sets the standards of what we look for in a firefighter: physical and mental determination, strength and one who stands out amongst others, and continues to give back to the community with their gifted skills,” states Pasadena Fire Chief Bertral Washington.

“I am humbled and honored to be inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame amongst the past inductees ” said Welch. “There have been so many talented and hard-working athletes who have come through the CWPA, so I’m thankful for being considered. I do my best to carry over all that I learned through water polo into my job now with Pasadena. My coaches, teammates and my family supported me and pushed me throughout my water career to be the best I can be, and they along with my current coworkers continue to do the same.”

Shana was the only female in her class to graduate from the San Pasqual Reservation Fire Academy in 2013. She was hired as a Pasadena Firefighter in January 2014 out of 4,000 plus applicants and she was again the only female selected.

In her spare time she continues to give back to the sport as a volunteer assistant women’s water polo coach at Long Beach State University. Shana and her Fiance Robyn live in Long Beach, CA and enjoy outdoor activities with their dog Baci, playing water polo together, and working out at Crossfit.
