Pasadena-based New Matter began shipping its revolutionary new consumer 3D printer to customers this week just hours after the device won a Best in Show Award in 3D Printing at the CE (Consumer Electronics) Week in New York City.

The new printer, called the MOD-t, has been on the drawing board since last when New Matter promised it would be commercially available in the spring of 2015.

MOD-t is a Wi-Fi capable made-for-the home 3D printer which New Matter co-designed with the product design company, frog. Its design, according to New Matter, increases the reliability of 3d printers “by significantly reducing part count and featuring an ingeniously simple way to move the print bed.”

CE Week selected MOD-t based on several criteria including usability, design, innovation, important features and overall user value.

“We are honored to be recognized by CE Week,” Steve Schell, CEO and co-founder of New Matter. “Our goal was to create the first truly easy-to-use at-home 3D printing experience at an affordable price.”

MOD-t now combines with the New Matter Online Store, which just launched, to create what the company calls “a complete ecosystem to make 3D printing accessible to anyone.” The online store offers dozens of free designs for new users to begin printing with ease. These designs were handpicked and fully tested on the MOD-t, so they print the way the designer intended.

Among the features of the MOD-t printer are its being plug-and-play operable, use of the safe and environmentally-friendly Polylactic Acid (PLA) plastic, print speeds of 80mm per second, and selectable laser resolution at 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4mm.

With its built-in Wi-Fi, the MOD-t easily connects with the New Matter Online Store where users can choose from a wide selection of customizable designs. New Matter describes it as perfect for DIY makers, families, educators and many other types of users.

The MOD-t retails for $399.

New Matter Inc. was founded in 2014 with a mission to bring 3D printing to every home, school and office. With its flagship products, the company is poised to revolutionize the consumer 3D printer market by providing “the first and only affordable, fully integrated end-to-end consumer 3D printing experience.” New Matter is backed by leading venture capital firms and is an operating company of Idealab, a creator and operator of technology companies that has started more than 125 companies since 1996, resulting in more than 40 IPOs and acquisitions.

New Matter and Idealab offices are at 130 W Union Street in Pasadena.
