Pasadena Home Goes Up in Flames Early Sunday

Squatters in a vacant single story home on North Fair Oaks Avenue may have caused a damaging fire early Sunday morning.

The 2:34 a.m. fire in the 1600 block was knocked down quickly.

Pasadena police shut down north-bound traffic on Fair Oaks Avenue during the firefight.

The home was surrounded by a gate with a sign which said the property was vacant. The sign turned out to be misleading, sources said.

Instead, inside the burning structure firefighters found ample evidence that squatters may have been inside at the time blaze started. In their haste to flee, authorities said the squatters had left personal effects behind, even flashlights, which were still turned on when found.

No serious injuries were reported.

A Fire Department investigator found the cause of the blaze to be from an undetermined-heat source in the rear bedroom, authorities said.
