A Pasadena man accused of murdering a 76-year old Arcadia woman, while burglarizing her home, pleaded not guilty Aug. 28 to the charges against him.

Heber Enoc Diaz was arrested in April for the murder of Chyong Jen Tsai who was found dead in her backyard. The body was discovered April 9 and Diaz was arrested April 19.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office charged him with one count of murder with special circumstance allegations that it was committed during a robbery. He is further charged with second-degree burglary and one felony count each of first-degree residential burglary, second-degree robbery, and elder abuse.

According to the district attorney’s office, Diaz was employed on contract work being done at the victim’s home on the 300 block of East Forest Avenue in Arcadia, but was no longer working there on the day her body was found.

Arcadia police responded to a report of a person down and found Tsai in the backyard where she was pronounced dead.

“On that day, Diaz was allegedly burglarizing her garage when he encountered the victim and killed her,” the district attorney said in a statement.

Diaz is looking at life in the state penitentiary without possibility of parole.

Two others have been arrested in the case for receiving stolen property, and have been charged with accessory after the fact: Isis Ondina Villalobos, 27; and Luis Alonso Cruz Gaitan, 33.
