California Highway Patrol said officers arrested a 26-year-old Pasadena man on suspicion of felony drunken driving, after his vehicle allegedly figured in a three-vehicle crash Saturday night on the northbound 110 Freeway in Elysian Park, Los Angeles.
The crash occurred at about 6:37 p.m., leaving a four-month-old girl in grave condition and injuring three other people, a report by City News Service said.
The baby girl died on Saturday, authorities said.
CHP said for still unknown reasons, a 48-year-old woman driving a 2006 Chrysler began slowing down and moving toward the right shoulder, at the same time a 2001 Chevrolet was speeding towards her direction.
In the next few seconds that followed, the Chevrolet struck the Chrysler, and both vehicles careened out of control and struck another vehicle, also a 2001 Chevrolet, authorities reported.
CHP found the four-month-old girl, seated in the rear of the Chrysler, injured, pulseless and not breathing. She and the other occupants – a nine-year-old girl, a 23-year-old woman and a 48-year-old woman – were rushed to a hospital.
The baby was reported in grave condition, while the three others were in serious condition, City News Service quoted Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department as saying soon after the accident.
The driver of the third vehicle, a 35-year-old man from Denver, was not injured, KABC reported.
CHP identified the driver of the speeding Chevrolet as Jared Silvestri, who suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.
CHP arrested Silvestri at about 7:23 p.m. on suspicion of a felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to authorities.
It is not yet clear if the infant’s death will lead to additional counts filed against Silvestri.
