Police arrested a 47-year-old transient after he reportedly threw a lemon at a Pasadena resident, kicked the victim and then struck him with a PVC pipe just outside his home on Christmas morning.

The 69-year-old man was getting into his car at about 7:40 a.m. in the 800 block of North Madison Avenue in Pasadena when he felt something strike him in the back. It was a lemon with which the transient, later identified as Jose Suarez, allegedly pelted the victim, Pasadena police Lt. John Goodman said.

When the victim complained and told Suarez to stop throwing lemons at him, the suspect came closer and kicked the victim in the thigh, Goodman said.

“The victim called his son — his son came out and when that happened, the suspect decided to retrieve a piece of PVC pipe from an unknown location, and struck the victim with the piece of pipe,” said Goodman.

The victim’s son then called police.

Responding officers detained the suspect without incident and booked him at the Pasadena City Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, Goodman said.

Suarez remains in custody in lieu of a total of $56,000 in bail at the Twins Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. He is scheduled for arraignment on Thursday, December 27, at the Pasadena courthouse.
