Pasadena native David Long, who played for Loyola High School under Coach Marvin Sanders and went on to play cornerback for the Michigan State Wolverines, is coming back home after he was selected No. 79 overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft last weekend.

“Congratulations, welcome back home!” the Los Angeles Rams said on Twitter, quoting Rams Coach Aubrey Pleasant as he, General Manager Les Snead, Head Coach Sean McVay and other assistants called Long on the phone to say he’s been selected.

The Michigan cornerback opted to skip his senior season and declare for the 2019 draft. Appearing in 13 games in 2018, Long finished his season with one interception, six passes defended, and 17 tackles.

Long initially joined Michigan as a four-star recruit from Los Angeles. A two-way athlete at Loyola, he transitioned to a full-time cornerback during his true freshman season with the Wolverines.

After playing sparingly in 2016, Long saw a regular role on defense as a Sophomore. Appearing in 11 games, Long recorded two interceptions, six passes defended, and 20 combined tackles.

In all, Long finished his college career with three interceptions, 12 passes defended, and 37 tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, Long possessed the ability to lock down his side of the field, and entered the draft as the 33rd best prospect.

Long, 21, was one of the best cornerbacks in the nation last year, providing lockdown press coverage throughout the season, Last Word on Football said.

His only physical limitation is his height. While he won’t let opposing wide receivers get open, he might not be able to match up with larger wide receivers. His 5’11” height is below-average and his arm length tested in the 27th percentile. That said, his vertical jump still put him in the 87th percentile of the draft class.

In the fifth round, the Indianapolis Colts chose another Pasadena native, Marvell Tell III, as the 144th pick.

“Congratulations @MarvellTell_7! The USC captain is headed to Indy,” a tweet by the USC Trojans early Sunday.
