Pasadena Police Chief Recaps the Week’s Major Crime Incidents

On November 9 at about 4:03 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 2300 block of East Colorado Boulevard regarding an irate subject striking cars. The suspect also assaulted a victim prior to officers arriving to investigate the incident. An off-duty law enforcement and a security agent detained the suspect until Pasadena Police officers arrived. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident and booked at the Pasadena jail.

On November 11 at about 12:22 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to a possible death investigation in the 1200 block of Rexford Avenue. A neighbor reported that they had not seen their neighbors for several days. When PPD officers entered the residence, they located two elderly victims who were deceased (Male, 83, and a Female, 85). There were no signs of foul play. Offices notified the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Officer who responded to secure the victim’s body.

On November 16 at about 3:15 a.m., Pasadena Police officers attempted to contact the driver of a dark colored SUV for a traffic violation in the area of Estado Street and Avocado Lane. The male driver was armed with a handgun and sped away, nearly striking one of the officers. At least one shot was fired by officers. Officers pursued the suspect vehicle for a short distance; however, they lost sight of the vehicle in the vicinity of Sierra Madre Boulevard and the 210 Freeway. No officers or residents were injured.

Pasadena Police detectives and forensic personnel responded to the scene and completed a comprehensive investigation. A short time later, police detectives contacted the Southwest Regional Pacific Fugitive Task Force who located the suspects involved in the assault and Officer Involved Shooting (OIS). The suspects, Sanjay Varma, Male Indian, 32, Pasadena Resident, and gang member associate, and Crystal Orleans, Female Filipina, 22, Moreno Valley Resident, were arrested without incident. The suspects were booked in the Pasadena jail.

On November 17 at 9:18 a.m., Pasadena Police Officers Florendo and Karg responded to the area of Hastings Ranch and Rosemead Boulevard to investigate a traffic hazard. On arrival, officers observed a subject standing in the intersection attempting to direct traffic. The officers contacted the subject who, without warning, punched one of the officers. The officers quickly detained the subject. The subject was transported to the Pasadena jail.

On November 21 shortly after 7:00 p.m., two Adult Male Black Suspects walked into Peppe’s Video Store, 313 East Orange Grove Boulevard, produced a handgun, and announced a robbery. The victim and one of the suspects engaged in a physical altercation. During the fight, at least one shot was fired, which hit the victim in the upper torso. Pasadena Police officers responded quickly to the scene; however, the suspects had fled the location. Despite a comprehensive search of the area, PPD did not locate the suspects; however, there was evidence recovered at the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he received medical care for a gunshot wound.
