Pasadena Police Offer Prevention Tips for Home Burglary

During these warm summer months, residents tend to leave windows and sliding doors open at all hours of the day and night. These insecure access areas are viewed as prime opportunities for thieves.

Residential Burglaries are crimes of opportunity and records show that they often occur during the day while families are away from the home; however, homes can be targeted at any time, including during the night when occupants are home and asleep.

Once inside your home, burglars look for items that can be easily taken and/or sold on the street. Some of these items include, but are not limited to, purses/wallets, cash, jewelry, laptops, tablets, cellular phones, CD/DVD players, video games and consoles, guns and other electronic devices.

Protect your home and yourself by making your residence less of a vulnerable target with the below tips:

DOORS and WINDOWS:

• Set your home’s security system every time you leave the home

• Always lock your doors and windows when away from home

• Use solid core or metal exterior doors

• Install a peephole on your front door

• Use dead bolt door locks on exterior doors and double cylinder dead bolt locks, if any window is within 3 feet of a door lock

• Add track-type locks, removable drop bars, wooden dowels, or pinning devices to add extra security to sliding windows and doors

• Change the locks when moving into a new residence

• Give a trusted neighbor or close family member a spare key instead of hiding it outside

• Keep your valuable personal property and information in a safe deposit box or a floor bolted safe

WHILE ON VACATION:

• Ask a family member, trusted neighbor or friend to check your home regularly

• Consider hiring a house sitter

• Ask neighbors to collect and store trash bins, newspapers, door flyers and mail

• Ask a trusted neighbor to intermittently park in your driveway

• Install an approved and monitored residential audible alarm system

• Use timers on indoor lights, televisions and radios to make location appear occupied

• Have planned deliveries left with a neighbor verses your front porch

• Request a Vacation Home Check from your police department

LIGHTING AND LANDSCAPE:

• Install lights by all exterior doors and illuminate entryways at night. “Dusk to Dawn” and motion sensitive lights work well.

• Exterior lighting fixtures should be secure so bulbs can’t easily be removed or damaged

• Ensure house numbers are readily visible for emergency services response

• Minimize concealment areas surrounding your home by trimming tree branches seven feet above the ground, prune shrubs to under 3 feet high and keep shrubbery trimmed for street view of doors and windows

DEALING WITH UNKNOWN PERSONS:

• View person at your door before opening (via peep hole or window)

• Announce to persons knocking at your door that you are home (don’t ignore)

• Never unlock or open the door to anyone before confirming their identity

• Verify workers by asking for physical identification cards and call their employer if necessary

• Never give keys to workers or allow unknown persons into your home or backyard without verification

• Immediately report any suspicious activity to police department

If you “See Something, Say Something.” Reporting suspicious activity when you first learn of it gives law enforcement a greater chance of disrupting criminal activity.
