Pasadena Police Release Details of Recent Critical Incidents

Pasadena police have released a “community brief” which summarized noteworthy incidents which occurred last month.

The report is comprised of “snapshots of the one-thousand calls received by the Pasadena Police Communications on an average day.”

What follows is the briefing in full as issued by the Pasadena Police Dept.

November 1, 2019, 6:21 p.m.: Officers responded to the area of Lincoln Ave and Orange Grove Blvd. regarding a fire. PFD responded and extinguished the fire. The damage consisted of five city oak trees on Orange Grove north of Cypress, three palm trees located on the corner of Orange Grove/Cypress and shrubbery against a fence of a nearby school. No structures were damaged and there were no injuries.

November 1, 2019, 9:22 p.m.: Pasadena Police Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1800 block of Navarro Ave. Officers arrived to find a vehicle that had been hit by gunfire. Moments later a caller from the 1700 block of Newport Ave. reported 3 females had been shot and a male with a glass injury to his face. The victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The investigation into this shooting is ongoing.

November 2, 2019, 10:11 p.m.: A witness reported seeing a suspect remove a handgun from the trunk of a vehicle in the 1100 block of Fair Oaks Ave. That witness called police and officers responded to the area and saw the described suspect separate from a group and begin walking southbound through the housing complex. The suspect walked behind a building and then reappeared. The suspect was detained and the officers backtracked where he had gone behind the building and found a loaded handgun. The suspect was arrested for possession of a firearm, ammunition and high capacity magazine by a felon.

November 3, 2019, 6:36 p.m.: Loss prevention employees from a business located in the 200 block of W. California Blvd. attempted to make contact with a female who was shoplifting inside the store. A confrontation ensued and the loss was recovered. The suspect ran and entered a vehicle that was in the parking lot and in an attempted to flee the scene, the suspect reversed her car and struck one of the loss prevention employees. The employee suffered minor injuries. The suspect was identified but she was not immediately arrested. Follow-up investigation will be conducted.

November 6, 2019, 1:42 a.m.: A body was found on Angeles Crest Highway near mile marker 26.8. This section of the highway is in Pasadena’s jurisdiction and the Pasadena Homicide unit was dispatched to the scene. On arrival, detectives found a male appearing to be in his 20s, deceased from a gunshot. Based on the circumstances and location it is being investigated as a homicide. The following day, Homicide Detectives identified and took into custody the person believed to be responsible for the murder.

November 9, 2019, 2:52 a.m.: Officers responded to a traffic collision at Los Robles Ave. and Colorado Blvd. at approx. 2:52 am. One vehicle came to rest against a building at the North West Corner of Los Robles and Colorado, while a second vehicle rolled over hitting a city information sign. The driver of the first vehicle had an open container inside her vehicle and was arrested for DUI. Minor injuries were reported by occupants in both vehicles.

November 10, 2019, 10:08 a.m.: Officers responded to a fight in the area of Corson St. and Wilson Ave. Officers arrived and contacted a person who stated he was approached by a male and female who punched him in the face and took his iPhone 8. The victim chased the suspects as they ran away, then suddenly they turned and assaulted him again. The victim was knocked to the ground and the female suspect picked up a stick and started hitting him with it. The victim sustained multiple lacerations on the face, back, arms, foot and nose. The victim refused medical treatment and the loss was not recovered.

November 10, 2019, 8:46 p.m.: Pasadena Police Department dispatch received a call of a male that was bleeding and knocking on the front door of a residence in the 600 block of E. Washington Blvd. Pasadena Fire Department personnel located the individual near the intersection of Hudson Ave. and Washington Blvd. Officers responded to the location and found an individual with a 1/2 inch puncture wound to the stomach and a one-inch puncture wound on the right side of his torso. The individual was transported to HMH for treatment of his wounds. Officers attempted to interview the victim but he was uncooperative and provided them with very little information. Further investigation by detectives will be conducted into this incident.

November 12, 2019, 1:00 a.m.: Officers responded to the 100 block of S. Parkwood Ave. regarding an assault. The victim had been assaulted by his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. When the suspect arrived at the victim’s residence, he charged the victim, struck him on the face with a flashlight and activated a stun gun. As the victim attempted to call police, the suspect hit the victim on the back of the head with the flashlight and fled in a vehicle. The suspect and vehicle were not immediately located.

November 12, 2019, 12:14 a.m.: Officers responded a Pasadena residence regarding a restraining order violation with a named suspect. A police helicopter arrived at the location and saw a male dressed in all white, fleeing the location on foot to his vehicle which was parked 1/4 mile away from the residence. The suspect drove away in a rapid and reckless manner while looking up to see if the police helicopter was still following him. The police helicopter directed the officers to the 2 freeway and San Fernando Road where the suspect yielded to the ground units and a traffic stop was conducted. The victim in this case is a celebrity who has been stalked by the suspect for years and he has threatened in the past to kidnap her. The suspect was arrested for stalking.

November 13, 2019, 11:43 p.m.: A hit and run collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist occurred on Marengo Ave. at the intersection with Villa St. The vehicle was driving north on Marengo Ave. and collided with a bicyclist, who appeared to be traveling in the same direction, throwing the victim across the intersection of Villa St. The suspect vehicle fled and was followed by a witness who was able to get a photograph of the vehicle’s license plate. The victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital by paramedics. The suspect’s vehicle license plate returned to an address in San Bernardino. Local police agencies were contacted and provided a vehicle description and license plate number. A Glendora Police Department officer located the suspect vehicle and pulled it over on the 210 freeway, near the city of San Dimas. The vehicle had a smashed windshield and blood on the hood of the car. The driver showed signs of alcohol intoxication and was arrested for felony hit and run/DUI. The victim was taken into emergency surgery in stable condition. The Pasadena Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded to conduct the collision investigation.

November 15, 2019, 10:00 a.m.: Officers responded to a report of a strong-arm robbery in the area of Del Mar Blvd. and Pasadena Ave. The victim, who was standing in the area of Del Mar Blvd. and Pasadena Ave., was holding a $20.00 bill in her hand. The victim was approached by a male subject, who took the $20.00 bill from her hand and punched the victim in the chest and shoulder. The victim refused medical treatment. The suspect was not immediately located.

November 16, 2019, 7:19 p.m.: A suspect entered a business located in the 700 block of E. Colorado Blvd. and was seen by Loss Prevention Officers, placing a television in his shopping cart. The suspect then attempted to walk out of the store without paying. When loss prevention stopped the suspect outside, they recovered the loss. While explaining to this suspect the process of his arrest, a second suspect approached the loss prevention officers and began to interfere with the employees. When they asked the second suspect to walk away, he lifted his shirt, exposing the handle of a gun in his waistband, and threatened the Loss Prevention Officers if they did not release the first suspect. Fearing for their safety, the employees did not attempt to stop the two suspects from leaving. After the suspects fled, Loss Prevention Officers called PD and provided a description of the two. Officers found the two suspect as they attempted to hide in a nearby parking structure. With the assistance of the Police Helicopter as well as K9 Officers and their partners, both suspects were located in the parking structure. They were quickly apprehended and the replica gun was recovered. There were no injuries as a result of the K9 deployment.

November 16, 2019, 8:41 p.m.: Officers responded to a business located in the 200 block of N. Lake Ave. regarding an assault. The victim, who was walking out of the store, was assaulted by a male suspect who was sitting immediately outside of the business, drinking alcohol. The suspect spit on the victim and made numerous derogatory comments about the victim’s race. The suspect used a shopping cart to corner the victim and lunged at the victim with a knife. The victim was not injured as a result. He attempted to get away from the suspect but the suspect followed the victim through the store’s parking lot, and once again, attempted to use the shopping cart to hit the victim, all the while the suspect used numerous racial  slurs. Officers arrived and located the suspect, who was taken into custody and arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. Based on the comments the suspect was making, it appears the crime was racially motivated.

November 18, 2019, 4:24 a.m.: The victim, who was sleeping inside of her residence located in the 400 block of N. Raymond Ave, was awakened by her dog barking and got up to investigate. She saw a shadow and called out. When a suspect answered back, she fled to her neighbor’s apartment and called the police. Upon searching the residence, officers saw the suspect exit the back door and took him into custody. The suspect had loss in his pocket along with methamphetamine and a pry tool was located near the rear door which showed signs of forced entry. The suspect was arrested and booked for residential burglary.

November 20, 2019, 1:54 a.m.: Officers responded to a ringing alarm of a business located in the 500 block of S. Fair Oaks Ave. and found an open door. Owners responded and produced video showing a suspect removing loss from the location. Officers checked the area and located a suspect who matched the description from the video provided by the owner. Upon contact, the suspect admitted to entering the business and taking the loss. He claimed he dumped the speaker in an alley, however officers were unable to locate it. The suspect was arrested for commercial burglary.

November 20, 2019, 10:07 p.m.: The suspect and victim in this incident, agreed to meet in the area of Forest Ave. and Hammond St. for the purposes of a vehicle sale. The victim, who intended to purchase the vehicle, got into the suspect’s vehicle (not the vehicle he intended to sell) so that the suspect could drive the victim to see the car that was for sale. After driving a block or so, the suspect stopped and told the victim to give him his money while removing a gun from his pocket. Fearing for his safety, the victim handed over his money and got out of the car. The victim identified the suspect by name, but responding officers did not immediately locate the suspect.

November 21, 2019, 3:37 p.m.: Officers were dispatched to a robbery involving a juvenile victim and 3 juvenile suspects. The victim and three suspects all attend a local high school together and the robbery occurred as the victim exited a Metro bus, near the intersection of Washington Blvd and Marengo Ave. The suspects, who were also riding the same bus, exited at the same location and contacted the victim, demanding a gold-colored chain that was around the victim’s neck. The victim refused to give the chain, at which time the first suspect punched the victim in the face, causing the victim’s nose to bleed. The victim was able to punch back at the suspect, but he also fell to the ground as a result of being hit in the face. Once on the ground, the first suspect pulled the necklace off of the victim’s neck and all three suspects ran N/B on Marengo Ave. The victim refused any medical treatment. The victim knows the three suspects from school and was able to provide social media information to the officers. Two of the suspects were possibly identified from the social media information. Two of the three suspects were arrested the following day.

November 22, 2019, 10:36 a.m.: Officers responded to a local high school in the 3800 block of Sierra Madre Blvd. after receiving reports of a panic button app being activated by staff reporting an active shooter at the school. Upon arrival, officers discovered no emergency and business as usual with staff attempting to find out what employee may have activated the panic button. Officers swept the school out of an abundance of caution and the school performed an attendance count finding 100% of the students being accounted for and safe. No students were injured and there was no active shooter.

November 25, 2019, 11:21 a.m.: Officers responded to a business located in the 1800 block of Walnut St. in regards to a suspicious package containing a powdery substance. The fire department, along with Hazmat responded and ultimately the substance was deemed nonhazardous. As a precaution, the surrounding area was blocked off for emergency vehicles.

November 27, 2019, 10:18 p.m.: Officers responded to the 1900 block of Navarro Ave regarding a suspicious vehicle occupied by people who were possibly using illicit narcotics. Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle parked on the city street occupied by four people. Investigation revealed that two people had outstanding arrest warrants. The other two individuals in the vehicle were on active parole. A search of the vehicle yielded a handgun that was found to be stolen. All four suspects were arrested without incident for charges stemming from the outstanding warrants and being felons prohibited from possessing a firearm.

November 29, 2019, 11:07 p.m.: Officers were flagged down in the area of Chester Ave. and Del Mar Blvd. by a distraught mother regarding her missing teenage daughter. Officers canvassed the area and located the missing juvenile about an hour later. The juvenile displayed minor injuries consistent with a physical assault. A subsequent investigation revealed the victim’s mother had assaulted the minor prior to the incident. Officers arrested the mother for child abuse and took the minor into temporary protective custody. Los Angeles County’s Department of Children and Family Services were notified and responded to the police station.

November 30, 2019, 8:44 p.m.: Officers responded to a residence located in the 1100 block of Arden Rd. regarding a residential burglary. Two suspects were captured on surveillance camera, entering the rear of the property and used a ladder that was at the residence to gain access to a balcony into the master bedroom. The suspects smashed a window to enter the room. The suspects stole several items of jewelry from the residence. The suspects then fled the location via the front door. The suspects have not yet been located or identified
