Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip Sanchez said Sunday that his officers have seized three illegal handguns in three days while making arrests.

“The volume of guns in our community continues to concern me,” Sanchez said. “My officers frequently engage armed persons and/or individuals who have immediate access to firearms. Guns of course complicate any dynamic and create a dangerous environment.”

The seizures of a small small caliber revolver, a .45 caliber semi-auto pistol and a loaded 9mm pistol reportedly came on July 2, 3 and 4.

Two of the seizures directly resulted from traffic stops initiated by Pasadena police. The third came after a fleeing felon was captured and the firearm was found in close proximity to the suspect, Sanchez said.

Sanchez said that many of the firearms booked by Pasadena police are stolen weapons taken during residential and vehicle burglaries.

“Gang members typically pass along guns to their confederates to ensure they maintain access,” Sanchez said.

In his statement, the Chief addressed legal gunowners residing in Pasadena.

“If you are a gun owner, please secure it in a gun safe,” he said. “If you no longer wish to keep your firearm, please call the Pasadena Police Department and surrender it. My officers will provide you with a receipt and the gun will be destroyed.”

Pasadena Police Department may be reached by telephone at (626) 744-4501.
