Pasadena-based Red Hen Press, known for its poetry, womens and fiction titles, has released its first children’s book, called “The Adventures of Captain Pump: The World’s First Fitness Superhero!”
“Captain Pump teaches the kids to make healthy choices and he’s anti-bullying,” said Monica Fernandez, media manager for Red Hen Press in Pasadena.
The book was written by Jasson Finney, who is also an actor, known for the TV series “Daredevil” on Netflix, and other productions. Finney is a Canadian-born fitness trainer turned actor. His other credits include “Gotham” (2014) and “Zero Hour” (2013).
In the new book, the main character, George, is the janitor of a school. He hopes to find a way to help the kids get in shape and understand why it’s important to live a healthy life.
“But one day, a tiny fitness dynamo pops out of a magic comic book and changes janitor George’s life forever,” the storyline reads.
While the adventure takes place in the real world, the lessons in the book are magical and the characters move into a land where social acceptance and healthy living is the norm. The land is called “Pumpland.”
There are, of course, a variety of villains threatening the existence of Pumpland and that’s what keeps the Captain on alert to protect the citizens.
