In the midst of holiday shoppers, a transient attempting to rob a Pasadena Target store slashed a security guard with a box cutter before being detained Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the guard received a two-inch laceration in the thigh which required minor medical attention. He was not transported to a hospital.

The slashing occurred about 5 p.m. as the suspect struggled with the loss prevention guard in the store at 777 E. Colorado Boulevard. The guard reportedly spotted the suspect trying to take $280 worth of electronics without paying and intervened, police said.

Additional security guards joined in the struggle to detain the man and aid their wounded comrade, police said.

When Pasadena officers arrived the suspect was detained and in a holding area within the store, police said.

Harold Lee Doty, 47, was arrested and booked for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and shoplifting, police said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. records show Doty is being held in the Inmate Reception Center jail in Los Angeles in lieu of $50,000 bail.
