The period of open enrollment to themed, magnet, or specialized schools and programs for Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) students is set to begin Jan. 10 and run through Feb. 1, according to a Jan. 4 press statement from the district.
PUSD students can attend their community school or take advantage of the annual open enrollment period and apply for different educational experiences offered elsewhere in the district.
Among those options are magnet schools focused on the arts, early college, science, technology, engineering and math. Also offered are dual language immersion programs in French, Mandarin or Spanish. There is an international baccalaureate program as well as high school college and career academies.
The district has made some moves to make the open enrollment process easier. One lifts the cap of five schools families were permitted to apply for so that the number is now unlimited during each lottery round.
Additionally, the same preference list is applied in each round. After the final lottery round, families whose choices did not prosper can join the waiting list for each of their preferred schools in the event there are subsequent openings.
