Mercy Santoro, Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Pasadena Unified School District, issued a statement Friday afternoon in the wake of a tumultous Board of Education meeting December 17 which saw a number of parents and community members complain about Madison Elementary School Principal Juan Ruelas.

Santoro’s statement in full reads:

“Over the past several months, important changes have taken place at Madison Elementary to ensure that the children who attend the school thrive and are prepared to access important opportunities for college and their future throughout their academic career in PUSD. Changes in teaching staff, academic rigor, increased parent resources and school services, such as a librarian to support reading and writing programs, are having a positive impact.”

“Principal Juan Ruelas has placed a strong emphasis on fulfilling the academic potential of the children of Madison, and is partnering with families to strengthen connections between home and school. He has raised expectations for the achievement of Madison’s children because he knows from personal experience that they can succeed if the adults around them come together.
He personally shares the first-generation experiences of many Madison families; his family emigrated from Mexico for work so that he and his siblings could achieve the American dream. Principal Ruelas personally knows the many sacrifices Madison families are making to ensure their children reach their full potential.”

“PUSD leaders have listened to the concerns shared by students; teachers, parents and the community about changes made at Madison, and participated in multiple conversations with them. The allegations made against Principal Ruelas have been investigated and found to be without cause. What is important as we move forward in the New Year is that we continue our dialogue and work together in the best interest of children.”

“While change is difficult, Principal Ruelas’s experience and personal life story makes him an excellent fit to lead Madison forward. Efforts to recognize students for their many accomplishments around attendance, academic excellence and overall improvement are being celebrated with Madison families. Madison is growing as a school community focused on supporting student success.”
