Pasadena Unified Celebrates Afterschool Programs and Their Importance in Childrens’ Lives

Schools in the Pasadena Unified School District are joining the national Lights On! Afterschool celebration October 19 to 23, 2015.

Launched in October 2000, Lights On! Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On! Afterschool draws attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things – science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do and poetry – and discover new skills.

The simultaneous events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.

In Pasadena, PUSD is partnering with community afterschool programs such as the City of Pasadena’s After School Adventures, YMCA, Day One, Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena, College Access Plan, A Step Ahead and the Partnership for Children Youth and Families for the weeklong celebration. Approximately half of PUSD’s 18,000 students attend a community afterschool program.

On Tuesday, October 20th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Partnership for Children, Youth and Families will be hosting an event at El Portal Restaurant, 695 E. Green Street. Local business owners, city officials, district employees, and community members will celebrate the work of afterschool programs in Altadena, Pasadena and Sierra Madre and highlight the continued need for programs.

Lights On! celebrations will be held throughout the week at the following locations:

Monday, October 19, 4 p.m. at Eliot Middle School, 2184 N Lake Avenue, Altadena
Tuesday, October 20, 4 p.m. at John Muir High School, 1905 Lincoln Avenue, Pasadena
Wednesday, October 21, 4 p.m. at Blair High School, 1202 S Marengo Avenue, Pasadena
Thursday, October 22, 4 p.m. at Pasadena High School, 2925 E Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena
Friday, October 23, 4 p.m. at Wilson Middle School, 300 Madre Street, Pasadena
