Mentors who volunteer to guide and support Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) students will be honored at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 6 p.m. at Pasadena High School. Mentors work with elementary, middle, and high school students who struggle with attendance, behavior, or academics.

“Every student needs a mentor to guide and support them,” says Eric Sahakian, Assistant Superintendent of School Support Services. “There’s a direct correlation between a child’s social-emotional well-being and his or her academic achievement: when students are supported, they achieve at higher levels and navigate school successfully. We are pleased to honor volunteers who give so generously of their time to mentor our youth.”

Mentors are part of the district’s “Mentors for Life” program that facilitates weekly mentoring and leadership workshops with the support of Positive Connections, LEARNs, staff, adult mentors, and peer mentors. Topics range from bullying, safety, respect, focus, task completion, leadership, friendship, and mentorship. Students learn new skills, collaborate with peers, and engage in interactive mentoring activities. The purpose is to establish positive connections with peers and the community.

Mentors for Life serves 110 students who meet during LEARNs afterschool program. To learn more about Mentors for Life and how to volunteer, contact Giovanni Ayala at ayala.giovanni@pusd.us or 626.396.3600 ext. 88230.
