Pasadena Unified Named a Top Tree-Saving School District, Gets Earth Day Green Campus Award

Pasadena Unified School District has been picked as one of three school districts across the U.S. to receive a Green Campus Award in celebration of Earth Day.

The awards were presented by Peachjar, a company that helps schools improve their school-to-home communication by delivering e-flyers directly to parents, eliminating the need for paper. With Peachjar’s e-flyer delivery system, Pasadena public schools are going paperless to a greater degree, and saving trees.

In celebration of Earth Day, Peachjar announced that since its inception in 2011, the company has helped schools eliminate the need to print nearly 600 million sheets of paper, saving roughly 72,000 trees.

Aside from PUSD, the other Green Campus award winners are the Jenks Public Schools in Jenks, Oklahoma and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District in Danville, California. The three districts combined saved 2,460 trees over the past year, according to Peachjar.

“We are honored to be recognized for supporting green initiatives,” says Mercy Santoro, associate superintendent of school support services for PUSD. “This award is evidence of the focus on sustainable resources, not only as a district but citywide. Our efforts are prefaced by a continued focus and commitment to being a model district that practices conservation.”

Mike Durham, founder and CEO of Peachjar, said they are thrilled to help school districts across the nation achieve their goals of becoming environmentally friendly.

“As a thank you for their environmental conservation efforts, we’ve arranged for 100 trees to be planted in the Tahoe National Forest in each of the award-winning district’s names,” Durham said.

Peachjar was founded in 2011 in response to the billions of paper flyers being carried home from schools each year in children’s backpacks.
