Pasadena Unified School Board Will Meet This Thursday

The Board of Education of the Pasadena Unified School District is set to approve next week PUSD’s Tentative Agreements with the members of the California School Employees Association covering working hours and overtime, pay and allowance and employee benefits.

The agreements include that covering a one percent salary increase for all CSEA Pasadena Chapter members effective July 1, 2016, and a commitment to pay any increases in Health and Welfare benefits for plan years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.

Representatives of the CSEA chapter and PUSD have signed the agreements, which will now be confirmed by the Board of Education during its meeting on Thursday, March 30.

During the meeting, the PUSD Board of Education will also hold two important public hearings: one for the state waiver request for PUSD’s Learning Works program to access funding under SB740, which provides funding assistance to charter schools for rent and lease expenditures, and the other regarding the charter renewal petition by Pasadena Rosebud Academy.

Learning Works is a non-classroom study program that serves students who are at risk of discontinuing their education or have actually dropped out for various reasons.

The waiver is necessary since facilities funding from the state and federal governments are given only to schools that report classroom-based instruction. Learning Works spends about $175,000 for facilities during science labs, writing labs and health classes.

Two resolutions are also up for approval by the Board of Education next week: one recognizing and celebrating Cesar Chavez Day at PUSD schools on March 31, 2017, and another designating the month of April as PUSD Month of Commemoration for the Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. The second resolution, when adopted, will also ensure that the Armenian Genocide is properly taught to faculty members, the student body and the community.

The Board of Education will also act next week on several business matters including purchase orders, facilities contracts, personnel action, and ratify a Collective Bargaining Agreement with Teamsters Local 911 which covers food services, maintenance, operations, warehouse and information technology services at PUSD schools for the period from July 1, 2015 to September 30, 2018.

The Board of Education meeting starts with a closed session at 4 p.m. and proceeds to the open meeting at 5:30 p.m. at PUSD’s Elbie J. Hickambottom Board Room, 351 S. Hudson Avenue in Pasadena.
