Pasadena Water and Power Partners with Local Businesses

Pasadena Water and Power representatives have been meeting with the largest commercial energy customers and encouraging them to take part in a Voluntary Load Curtailment Program (VLCP), where businesses can reduce power usage or encourage their employees to conserve power.

In a memorandum to City Manager Steve Mermell, PWP Interim General Manager Bucharan S. Bawa said the utility is asking these commercial customers to identify reduction measures that they can easily put into effect especially on hot days.

The instances those measures would be in place include when the California Independent System Operator issues a Flex alert, or when Pasadena is concerned about possible rolling blackouts, Bawa said.

“Because the operation of each commercial customer varies, PWP is partnering with the business to develop individualized curtailment plans that define minimal but effective changes, such as increasing AC (air conditioning) temperature a few degrees and turning off unnecessary lighting,” Bawa said in the memorandum. “These efforts can provide significant power savings given their large-scale facilities and operations.”

PWP has also created customized messaging so each business could inform their employees and patrons about their conservation efforts, Bawa added.
As part of energy conservation measures, PWP is promoting double rebates for residential customers until October 31. It has also doubled rebates for commercial LED light bulbs up to 75 percent of the project cost.

With the rebate programs, PWP customers can switch to energy-efficient products and not only save money but also conserve energy resources.
