Pasadena City College Athletic Director Tony Barbone challenged the rest of the state’s ADs by taking “The Ice Bucket Challenge” on Monday. Barbone was dunked by PCC athletic trainers with the Lancers’ soccer teams rooting him on to show his support in the fight to find a cure for ALS. [The video is here: http://youtu.be/cYnw-_puWYM

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. There is no cure to this deadly disease.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has swept the nation as celebrities in sports and entertainment have accepted the challenge with YouTube videos of the ice-water dunking act.

In the video link, Barbone implores California Community College athletic directors to accept the challenge and then donate $100 each to the ALS Association, a non-profit group that has raised more than $15 million in this campaign as the donations provide local help for ALS patients, raise awareness of the disease, and help the global community in continuing vital medical research to try to find a cure.

Barbone’s reasoning for taking the challenge was a personal one as he lost a close friend to the disease in 2004.

“Dean Karnoski was a childhood friend of mine and later a college roommate,” Barbone said. “He went on to become a football coach. He directed Glendora High School to the CIF championship in 1989. He was diagnosed in 1997 thus my commitment to him and his family was daily up until his passing. So this video we put together is a reminder for me about Karno’s legacy and how important it is to find a cure for ALS.”

Donations can be made at the ALS Association website (www.alsa.org, the donation link is: https://secure2.convio.net/alsa/site/Donation2?df_id=27420&27420.donation=form1
