The Pasadena City College men’s basketball team performed a feat in scoring futility Friday night that hadn’t been done since John F. Kennedy was President of the United States.

Region No. 4-rated San Bernardino Valley College, the CCCAA state runner-up last season, limited PCC to its lowest point total in 52 years during a 73-30 win over the Lancers. It was the home opening game for the Lancers at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

PCC made just 12 of 59 shots from the field (20.3 percent), 3-for-23 from 3-point range (13 percent) and 3-for-13 from the free throw line (23.1 percent). The Lancers lost their fifth straight game to drop to 1-5.

SBVC (6-1) led 21-4 with 8:50 left in the first half and held a 32-16 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Wolverines scored 20 consecutive points before a free throw was made by PCC’s Jaryn Taylor to break a 9-minute scoreless slump, 52-17.

The last time PCC was held to as a low a points total was in 1962 when the UCLA Freshmen defeated the Lancers, 57-30. PCC’s last game below 30 points was during World War II when Camp Lockett won v. then Pasadena Junior College, 35-27, in 1945. Only three times since 1945 has a Pasadena team not scored more than 30 points.

No Lancers player scored in double figures with Taylor and guard Andrew Harper scoring eight points each. It was the PCC debut of center Donell Tuff, who played on the school’s football team as a wide receiver. The 6-foot-6 Tuff, from Tifton County, Georgia, scored seven points, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and made three steals.

San Bernardino was paced by Kyle Benton with 27 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolverines outrebounded PCC, 43-19, in individual boards (46-27 with team rebounds). SBVC scored nine baskets on offensive rebound put-backs.

The Lancers next play at the 42nd Santa Barbara City College Classic December 11-13.
