In 2003, the Pasadena City College women’s swim team won its only South Coast Conference team championship in the sport. Since that time, while different schools have won the title, Mt. San Antonio has been a consistent hurdle for the Lancers. But on opening day of the SCC dual season Friday, host PCC broke an 11-year streak of losses to the Mounties and swept a double dual over Mt. SAC, 154-117, and Cerritos, 175-96.

The victory could be a sign that PCC is a legitimate contender for the 2015 conference crown.

PCC won 10 of the 14 events, including three individual victories by top sophomore Connie Peng and three more by freshman Ariahn Givens.

Peng won by nearly eight seconds faster than the next swimmer in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.74). Twice, she held off opponents to win the 200 backstroke (2:22.03) by .67 of a second over Mt. SAC’s Kayleigh Davidson, and by .53 over Cerritos’ Amanda Loya to capture the 200 butterfly victory in 2:26.02.

Givens dominated the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 (25.68), the 100 (56.61) and 200 (2:03.46). She won the 200 by a whopping 4.78 seconds.

Freshman Liza Echeverria won the 100 breaststroke (1:16.02) and edged sophomore teammate Tiffany Wong to win the 200 individual medley in 2:22.30 over Wong’s 2:22.45. Wong easily placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.10) and also earned a second in the 50 freestyle (26.32). The Lancers also won the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:01.45 behind the swimming of Peng, Echeverria, Wong and freshman Phoebe Lee.

“One key in beating Mt. SAC was how we opened with a second and a third in the 500 freestyle,” said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. “Both Courtney Fukushima and Victoria Leflang earned us key points in that event and gave us some momentum. We have some depth and we had swimmers who were reaching those secondary places, which will be a key for us down the line.”

The letterman Fukushima swam a 5:47.61 behind 500 free winner Davidson while Leflang, also a sophomore, was just behind her at 5:47.95. Other top finishes were turned in by Echeverria (second in the 200 breaststroke, 2:43.77), Leflang (second, 1,000 freeestyle, 11:55.32 and fourth in the 200 IM, 2:32.40), Fukushima (third, 1,000 free, 11:56.33), Deborah McCandliss (third, 200 backstroke, 2:43.88), and Lee (fourth, 100 freestyle, 1:03.07).

MEN 0-2 IN SCC MEET

Despite two event victories each by Mohammad Esmaeilian and Samuel Sanchez, the Lancers men dropped their two duals, losing to Mt. San Antonio, 182-87, and Cerritos, 174-92.

The sophomore Esmaeilian won the 100 freestyle by just .01 of a second over Mt. SAC’s Philip Wright, 48.78 to 48.79, and won the 200 freestyle in 1:48.53. He was second in the 50 free at 22.79. Sanchez, a freshman, scored wins in the distance freestyle, taking the 500 in 4:55.60 and winning the 1,000 in 10:27.56. Sanchez placed third in the 200 butterfly (2:10.01). PCC was second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:32.24).

The Lancers teams will participate in Northern California meets next week at Diablo Valley College in a dual meet Friday, Mar. 6 and at the College of Marin hosted Mariner Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 7
