The popular Japanese lifestyle retailer Miniso celebrated the opening of its new location at 88 W. Colorado Blvd in the heart of Old Pasadena Friday morning, making it the company’s first store to debut in the United States.

Only four years old, Miniso has emerged as a rapidly growing Japanese retailer which currently operates more than 1,800 stores worldwide and opens 100 more every month selling a range of stylish lifestyle products that are sold at affordable price points and built with quality.

“Pasadena is a diverse city and this is the best city we’ve ever seen. You can see foot traffic over here, people like to walk and shop and they like to feel the shopping experience and not just online shopping. We feel that this is the most comfortable area to open our first store,” said Miniso Chief Operating Officer Ben Yu.

Founded by Miyake Junya, chief designer and Ye Guofu, chief executive officer, Miniso applies the fast fashion concept to deliver designer-quality products, offering customers a shopping experience on par with luxury lifestyle brands, at affordable prices.

Miniso products—cosmetics, home furnishings, electronics accessories and more—typically retail between $1.99-$20.

“I am so glad to hear that you chose this area to have your very, very first [United States] store. You’re thoughts in terms of how you market the kind of product that you’re selling I think will have great appeal in the United States. You have affordable products, but products that can fulfill very important functions,” said Congresswoman Judy Chu at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Miniso’s products pursue a simple, natural and quality life philosophy and a brand proposition of coming back to nature, and reverting to the essence of products, according to a press release.

Those simple, natural and fashionable commodities are what Miniso executives say are popular among people aged between 18 and 35.

“I think nothing can stop us. First of all, Miniso believes in low cost, but high quality. We are now pulling the equivalent side of these two categories so now we are trying to fit in and now is the time to let us celebrate and work together in getting into that environment. Please accept Miniso and enjoy Miniso in the future,” said Yu.

Over 80 percent of product designs are originated from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, China and other countries.

Minso launches new products every seven days and the low-price but high quality products are popular among customers.

“We constantly refresh our inventory so every time you come to our store you will find something different,” explained Yu.

Currently, Miniso has signed strategic cooperation agreements with more than 40 countries and regions, including the U.S., Canada, Russia, Singapore, Dubai, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong (China), and Macao (China). On average, it opens 80 to 100 stores monthly.

Most Miniso stores are located in the large shopping centers in downtown areas, making Old Pasadena the ideal first store to make waves across seas.

The flagship store in Pasadena employs approximately 15 people, but will continue to grow as more stores are set to open in the region in 2017.

“We already signed a couple more deals and we have stores under construction so two to three months down the road we will have more and for this year we will have twenty to thirty more stores,” said Yu.

Miniso is located at 88 W. Colorado Blvd. on the southwest corner of Colorado and DeLacey.
