Popular Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘N Waffles on North Lake Avenue Unlikely to Close

The Pasadena location of Roscoe's Chicken 'N Waffles was crowded on Wednesday, March 30, 2016.

For locals often seen standing hungrily in line outside the North Lake Avenue restaurant marked by a sign with a chicken standing in front of a waffle, the news that one of their favorite eateries has declared bankruptcy is troubling.

Fortunately,  financial experts say, it’s very unlikely the chain’s seven restaurants throughout Southern California will close down.

An attorney for an ex-employee of Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘N Waffles said the popular restaurant chain will appeal a nearly $3.2 million judgment against them when a jury trial in October determined that his client was a victim of wrongful termination and discrimination.

Daniel Beasley’s attorney, Scott Cummings, told the Los Angeles Times that he had hired a lawyer to start the process of collecting on the judgment. Cummings told The Times that he was worried that a recent bankruptcy filing was an attempt to get away from paying what is owed to his client.

A jury awarded Beasley close to $1.7 million; he was also awarded $1.5 million in attorney’s fees.

Roscoe’s Parent Company, East Coast Foods Inc., filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, reporting that it has incurred more than manageable debt and requires restructuring. East Coast Foods estimates that it owes creditors between $10?million and $50?million, but has assets amounting to less than $50,000.

In court filings, the company did not say whether bankruptcy would affect the day-to-day operations.

And, according to a news statement from Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘N Waffles’ corporate office “we are open for business, and that we welcome people to continue coming in to our restaurant locations. We welcome the business.”

It was during in course of doing business at their Pico Boulevard location that Beasley, who is black, claimed he was discriminated against by Latino managers and coworkers at the West L.A. location where he worked.

Beasley, who filed the suit in 2013, said his Latino coworkers were treated better than he was and that the company gave Latino employees preferential treatment over black workers, including better schedules and shifts. He said he was fired in retaliation when he tried to change those practices. He became homeless after losing his job, according to media reports.

There are currently seven Roscoe’s Chicken ‘N Waffles locations; six in Los Angeles County and one in Orange County.
The original Roscoe’s opened in 1975 in Long Beach by Harlem native Herb Hudson, with the Pasadena location at 830 N. Lake Ave.
