The Pasadena City College softball team turned the Glendale Sports Complex into a launching pad Friday as the Lancers hammered both Ventura and Santa Monica in 5-inning mercy rule victories on day 1 of the Glendale Tournament.

Second-year head coach Monica Tantlinger has directed her team to a 3-0 start to the ’15 season. It is the first time since legendary/retired head coach Sandi Iverson’s 2006 team (her final year at PCC) went 6-0 to open that year.

PCC routed Ventura, 11-0, as second baseman Justine Zavala (pictured) bombed a 3-run homer to center field in a 5-run second inning during the morning affair. The Lancers belted out 10 hits as Zavala was 2-for-3 with four RBI, catcher Holly Riker-Sloan batted 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI, and first baseman Katelyn Thordarson was 2-for-3. Leftfielder Yecenia Cardenas stole three bases and scored a run as a pinch runner in the flex spot.

The beneficiaries of the offense were starter Breanna Rodrigo (four innings, 2-0 record) and reliever Brianna Lopez (one inning) who combined on a 2-hit shutout.

In the next game played early afternoon, the Lancers mercied Santa Monica, 12-2, also in five innings (8-run rule after five in the sport). PCC scored eight runs in the top of the fifth in slugging three home runs in the frame. Hitting in the vast dimensions of the complex field No. 3, shortstop Anais Sustayta opened the power display by belting a shot over the leftfielder’s head for a 2-run dinger. Riker-Sloan then rifled a ball that just landed fair inside the left field line and she circled the bases easily for another 2-run HR. Finally, it was Zavala who hit a deep drive to right for yet another 2-run blast. It was Zavala’s second at bat and hit of the inning.

Overall in a 13-hit attack, Zavala was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double while Sustayta batted 3-for-4. Leftfielder Mariah Quintana went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Cardenas picked up two more stolen bases.

Starter Cierra Newton threw four strong innings (three hits, one unearned run, two strikeouts) for the victory and Adriana Fernandez pitched the last inning (one unearned run).

The Lancers have created 36 runs and five home runs in their first three games.

“We knew our offense was explosive, so on a big field like this, we took advantage of our drives,” Tantlinger said. “We are pretty excited about the bats, but we had some defensive breakdowns in the SMC win. We are 3-0 and that’s the most important thing.”

PCC continues with three games Saturday at the Glendale Tournament beginning with an 11 a.m. game against Gateway Community College (Arizona).
