The Pasadena Police Department thanks their police dispatchers during the National Public Safety Telecommunicators Appreciation Week, April 13-19, 2014.

This week was established as a time to nationally recognize and thank telecommunications personnel across this country in the service they provide to the community in the public safety communications field. This year, many state and local governments will take time to recognize these “behind-the-scenes heroes”. Dispatchers are frequently the first line of communication people have when requesting help, and thousands of times a day they get the resources there to assist people as needed. Dispatchers are a lifeline to law enforcement and fire department personnel and vital to its day-to-day operations.

National Public Safety Telecommunications Appreciation Week began in 1981 when Patricia Anderson, of the Contra Costa County (California) Sheriff’s Office, wanted to recognize the contributions of public safety telecommunicators; she came up with the idea of designating a special week each year to honor them. Over the next three decades, National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week evolved from a local event, to a formal proclamation by Congress in October 1991 as an annual nationwide celebration of the men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency resources, and provide life-saving assistance in their indispensable service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

On behalf of the Pasadena Police Department, they applaud their tireless commitment and professionalism. A very special “thank you” to our own and thank you to all the public safety telecommunicators and dispatchers across this nation.
