Monday Rally at Freeway On-Ramp Supports Landmark U.S. Supreme Court Abortion Ruling

About a dozen of men and women donning pink shirts in support of Planned Parenthood gathered cheerfully at the busy Lake Avenue corner on-ramp onto the westbound 210 Foothill Freeway during Monday’s evening rush hour to show support for yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling that strikes down Texas abortion restrictions.

The supporters instantly grabbed the attention of hundreds of cars passing by, trading smiles and jumps of joy for honks from commuting supporters.

According to a press release issued by the Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley the ruling blocked two unconstitutional Texas restrictions that threatened to close all but nine health centers in the entire state that could provide abortion for the 5.4 million Texas women of reproductive age.

“Today is a great day. The Supreme Court made it clear that politicians cannot pass laws to block access to safe, legal abortion,” said Planned Parenthood Pasadena CEO and President Sheri Bonner, “Yet today’s victory does not undo the past five years of damage and restrictions already written into law. No woman or doctor should be punished for receiving or providing essential medical care. We will continue to fight restrictions on safe, legal abortion on behalf of our patients. We will not be punished, and we will not go back.”

Planned Parenthood has vowed to redouble its efforts to fight restrictions on safe and legal abortions across the country.

State lawmakers have passed more than 316 restrictions on safe, legal abortion since 2011 and have introduced 442 in the first six months of 2016 alone according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Locally, Planned Parenthood Pasadena operates four local health centers and treated over 49,000 patient visits the past year in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley.

The services provided include cancer screenings, all FDA-approved methods of birth control, annual exams, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infection and a range of pregnancy options, including abortions.
