People in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in Pasadena will celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision on the right of same-sex couples to marry anywhere in the United States with a rally on Friday night near the Metro Gold Line Station on Lake Avenue.
The LGBT advocacy group Pasadena Pride Center announced the activity on its Facebook page, calling it the Decision Day Rally.
“We are so very happy that the Supreme Court today has acknowledged the humanity of all LGBT people and their right to be with the ones that they love with the full array of legal advantages that come along with the institution of marriage. This is not an end to all discrimination, but the Court has broken one of the bigger bricks in that ugly wall,” the announcement said.
At least seven local organizations including the LGBT community of All Saints, the Pride Center and San Gabriel Valley Pride are joining the celebration near 340 N. Lake Avenue starting at 6:00 p.m.
The Supreme Court on Friday made the historical decision allowing same-sex marriage anywhere in the U.S., culminating about two decades of litigation over gay marriage and gay rights. Thirty-six states and the District of Columbia already allow same-sex marriage, but the ruling means the remaining 14 states will have to stop enforcing bans on the practice.
Among almost one million same-sex couples in the United States, about 400,000 are married according to the UCLA Williams Institute which supports LGBT advocacy. Before the decision came out, about one in every six married gay couples lived in states that didn’t recognize gay marriages.
