Michael Jackson tribute performer Rem J will join The Platters, Thee Midnighters and the original Delphonics at the second annual Remembrance Concert on April 20 to benefit the Pasadena High School Model A Ford Club.

One lucky winner who attends the concert will drive home a 1929 Model A Ford Roadster fully restored by the high school Model A student enthusiasts. It’s the second benefit concert to support the students’ efforts and will take place at Pasadena High School.

Not only is restoring the cars to showroom quality a great experience for Pasadena High School’s Model A club members, but at the concert, the car is raffled off.

“Last year’s winners Art Moore and his wife Olive bought the very last ticket and they went home with the 1928 Model A Ford Phaeton,” recalled Dr. Wilbert Smith, technical adviser to the Model A Club. “The students work all year to get a Model A in showroom shape, we raffle it off and that’s how we fund the club.”

Moore and his family had luck on their side last year. His son Kelly bought the ticket as a last-minute birthday present.

“My son bought me the raffle ticket,” he said. “He got up to excuse himself and it took him a while. When he came back he handed me the ticket and said ‘Happy Birthday, Dad.’ I said ‘Did you pay $100? He said, ‘Sure Dad, but you’re gonna win. I waited for the last ticket.’”

“There was a man 99 years old, one month shy of turning 100, and he went up on stage and cranked the barrel and he pulled the winning ticket,” Moore said. “It was the very last ticket. Everybody there watched the barrel being cranked. I never won anything before in my life.”

Moore is a Model A enthusiast and winning the Phaeton last year brings his household total to eight.

And for Smith and the students in the Model A Club, they’re learning lessons of teamwork and cooperation in addition to auto refurbishing. Inclusivity is the name of the game. The president of the club is a gal named Gigi Gusto, an 11th grader, and vice president is Paloma Castro.

Raffle tickets are $100. Show tickets are also available for $35 each.

The legendary bands will perform classic oldies and bring back memories of the sounds that kickstarted Rock N Roll. In addition to a performance by The Platters featuring Elmer Armstrong, the evening will also feature Thee Midniters, whose roots are grounded in early East Los Angeles, and the original Delfonics, known for their remarkable harmonies.

Rem J, who captured the crowd’s attention last year will return to perform as Michael Jackson in a tribute performance. His likeness to Michael Jackson and his song and dance style were applauded by audience members.
