On Saturday May 7, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) announced the winners of her 7th annual Artistic Discovery Competition. Now in its 35th year, the nationwide competition is sponsored by Members of Congress to promote and recognize the artistic achievements of students. Winners were selected from over 170 submissions by a committee of judges that took into account style, technique, originality, and creativity. The winning work will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol building for a year with other winning pieces from around the country while other selections will be hung in Congresswoman Chu’s Washington DC and district offices. All the winners will also receive scholarships. Rep. Chu released the following statement:
“Every year, I’m proud to continue this tradition of recognizing talented young artists by hosting the annual Artistic Discovery Competition. And I’m constantly impressed by the talent and emotional depth displayed by those who take part. This year, our over 170 submissions dealt with topics ranging from mental illness to family to nature to death and more. Each was unique in its own right because of the individual technique, style, and sense of raw emotion. These students inspire all of us. Like their teachers and parents, I’m proud of all our students who have used art to teach us about love and understanding.”
