Rep. Chu Outraged by GOP Lawsuit

Calls for Focus on Jobs Instead of Wasting Taxpayer Time and Money

Today, the House Republicans passed H.Res. 676 to authorize a lawsuit against President Obama over implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The lawsuit, which is expected to cost $1-2 million, comes as much of the Republican caucus is calling for impeachment hearings and with only days left in the session before the August recess. Rep. Judy Chu issued the following statement:

“This is an outrageous waste of taxpayer time and money. With just days to go before the long August recess, the Republicans voted to give Speaker Boehner a blank check to sue the President. This is an abdication of responsibility to pursue such a blatantly political cause, instead of working to jumpstart the economy or seeking a real solution to the humanitarian crisis on our border,” said Rep. Chu.

“Following in the mold of the government shutdown, which is estimated to have taken $24 billion out of the economy, House Republicans are demonstrating once again that there is no amount of taxpayer money they will not waste for the sake of attacking the President. Worse, many are looking to go further by miring an already ‘do nothing’ Congress in impeachment hearings – effectively stopping the chance of any real work being done,” continued Rep. Chu. “If my Republican colleagues truly want to help the American people, I urge them to drop this fruitless and divisive lawsuit and let us legislate to create good jobs here at home, make college more affordable, and reform on immigration system.”

The final vote count for H.Res. 676 was 225-201.

The House Democrats introduced an action plan for a Middle Class Jumpstart, which includes tax incentives to create good paying jobs, relief for college students struggling with staggering student debt, and ensuring women receive equal pay for equal work.
