Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement on the 81st anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act by President Franklin Roosevelt:

“Eighty-one years ago today, President Roosevelt revolutionized our country and the way we care for our citizens when he signed the Social Security Act. Since that day, Social Security has become a cornerstone of our social safety net, ensuring that seniors who worked hard their whole lives will not be left to spend their final years in poverty. But Social Security is much more than just a promise of stability to seniors. Many Americans rely on it to get through a disability or the loss of a family member. Over 110,000 people in my district alone have come to count on Social Security for part of their income, allowing them to live with security and dignity. Social Security has been an economic and a moral success, dependably keeping millions out of poverty. But as our country grows, so must this program. That is why I strongly support expanding Social Security to meet the needs of our people today and ensure that it remains a viable option for our future generations as well.”

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law on August 14, 1935.
