In honor of Black History Month celebrated in February, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement:
“Black history is American history. It is a celebration of pioneering scientists, defining artists, brave soldiers, ambitious entrepreneurs, inspiring athletes, and champions of civil rights in the face of the greatest injustices. It is an opportunity to immerse ourselves in our own history and rejoice in the diversity that makes our country so great.
“We look back at the progress that has been made just as we look ahead at the challenges still to be overcome. This year is particularly significant as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the historic 54 mile march from Selma to Montgomery. Hundreds of brave Americans marched for their basic right to vote and were brutally beaten as a result. Yet, just a few decades later, the protections they won are being eroded by a new era of voter disenfranchisement. The joy of Black History Month would be incomplete if it did not come with a resolve to continue the work of building a more fair and equal America for all.
“Our diversity is our greatest strength and am I so happy to be joining with so many across the country in celebrating this Black History Month.â€
