Rep. Chu Statement on GOP Budget

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed a Republican budget plan by a party line vote of 228-199. The budget plan repeals the Affordable Care Act, makes cuts to SNAP, Medicare, and Pell Grants. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), who opposed the Republican budget resolution, released the following statement:

“I am incredibly disappointed by the Republican budget plan which passed yesterday. Despite the incomplete economic recovery, Republicans are still pushing austerity. Instead of moving us forward with new investments and support for the middle class, this budget is another step backwards that slashes the very programs that help America grow. Tax cuts for the wealthy, a repeal of the ACA, and privatized Medicare mean that those who suffered the least during the recession will be helped the most by this budget. Meanwhile, working families and those still left behind by the economic recovery get even less – less nutrition assistance for families who can’t put food on the table; less support for low income students who strive to go to college. Although the proposals were rejected, the Democrats put forward a number of alternatives, including the Progressive “People’s Budget” which would have created 8.4 million jobs, invested in infrastructure, and helped more students go to school without a lifetime of debt.”
