Rep. Judy Chu Statement on Airstrikes in Syria

Last night, the United States, in coordination with five Arab countries, launched airstrikes against militants of the Islamic State in Syria. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement:

“The Islamic State is a serious threat that must be contained. Left unchecked, this brutal group will terrorize and destabilize the Middle East as well as the U.S. and our allies. Religious minorities under their control face oppression or death, which is both a humanitarian and moral concern. Notably, last night’s airstrikes demonstrated that the U.S. is not alone in confronting ISIL and in the next few weeks, we will have the opportunity and obligation to study the effectiveness of the strategy in bolstering moderates, degrading ISIL, and creating space for a political solution. But if the U.S. role against this new threat is to be sustained, Congress will need to revisit the need for authorization.”

In a separate operation last night also in Syria, the U.S. carried out airstrikes against an al Qaeda operatives in Syria, known as the Khorosan Group, that were plotting against the U.S. and other Western allies, according to the U.S. military.
