A man is clinging to life this morning after Pasadena police located him in a motel room, slumped in a chair, bleeding profusely from his head and holding a gun in his hand.

Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema said a guest at an inn in the 2000 block of East Colorado Boulevard reported hearing a gunshot at about 9:41 p.m.

Responding officers encountered a man “leaving the area in a hurry.”

Detained, the man told police that he had left his room at the motel about 20 minutes earlier and when he returned, he had found a unknown man covered in blood sitting in a chair inside his room.

The detained man claimed he did not know the wounded man and did not know how he got in the room.

Officers responded to the room found the man seated in a chair, Hettema said. There was blood around the table and floor beneath him. He was breathing.

Hettema said officers contained the room and attempted to talk to the subject to get him to drop the gun.

One officer was able to get another view into the room and saw the subject had a gunshot wound to the head, Hettema said.

Ultimately officers were able to move the gun from the wounded man’s hand and check on his condition. Hettema said Pasadena Fire Dept. paramedics rendered aid and transported the victim to a local hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the head.

“At this point, the investigation is being handled as an attempt suicide,” Hettema said.

Hettema said the man detained by police running from the room was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants. He is being treated as a witness only in the incident.
