Rising Freshman at Ramona Convent Wins $17,500 in College Scholarships in Optimist International Oratory Contest

Dominique Ruedaflores, an incoming freshman at Ramona Convent Secondary School and a recent eighth grade graduate from Monterey Highlands Elementary School in Monterey Park, won a total of $17,500 in college scholarships from the 2018 Optimist International Oratory Contest. Her journey to winning at the international level began when she competed and won the Los Angeles Monterey Park (LAMP) Optimist Club Oratory Contest in April 2018, which qualified her to compete in the zone level competition against winners from other local area clubs.

After winning the zone level competition, she competed in the Optimist International’s Pacific Southeast District competition where she won first place and received a $2,500 college scholarship. As the winner, she represented the Pacific Southeast District in the Optimist International Oratory Contest’s West Coast Regional Competition, held at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri, where she won first place and advanced onward to compete in the World Competition, on June 29, 2018. She ultimately won second place in the World Competition, culminating in an overall win of $17,500 in College Scholarships.

This year’s Optimist International Oratory contest theme was, “Where Are My Roots of Optimism,” and Ruedaflores’ speech focused on how she overcame a speech impediment after years of speech therapy, along with the love and support of her parents. In her speech, she attributed the characteristics of the Chinese zodiac animals to her family members based on their birth year, which led to her conclusion that her parents are the roots of her optimism. Ruedaflores’ success stems from dedication and hard work including 7:00 a.m. practices on weekdays and weekends.

Rudaflores’ win at the Optimist International Oratory competitions comes on the heels of her first place win at California’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) 2017 section and state competitions in the Introduction to Public Speaking competition category held in Westlake Village and Ontario, respectively, in 2017 when she was a seventh grader at Monterey Highlands.
