Students and teachers at Pasadena’s Rose City High School are grieving over the death of a senior who was killed along with her mother in a vehicle collision near North El Molino Avenue and East Maple Street early Tuesday morning.

The school community is also helping raise money for the funeral expenses and is accepting checks through the Pasadena Education Foundation.

“Rose City High School senior, Vanessa Escobedo, and her mother, Maria Escobedo, passed away early [Tuesday] morning in a horrible car accident in Pasadena, which also left two family members hospitalized,” Diane Orona, Administrative Manager at the PUSD Superintendent’s Office, said. “The family would greatly appreciate any help you may be able to provide.”

Family and friends have also started a campaign on GoFundMe.com and have raised over $5,640 since Tuesday. The family needs at least $20,000 for the funeral services.

“Maria Escobedo was a loving mother of four children, she dedicated her life to her children and will be greatly missed,” says a message on the GoFundMe account. “Vanessa Escobedo died just days before her 19th birthday. She was loving, funny, and loved by many. The loss of both women will forever devastate our family and those close to them.”

PUSD Assistant Superintendent Mercy Santoro earlier confirmed the victims were part of the school’s community.

“Unfortunately, yes, Vanessa was part of our PUSD family and attended Rose City,” Santoro said. “Counselors have been on site since yesterday morning to support grieving students.”

Mother and daughter were in a car that collided with another vehicle at about 12:13 a.m. Tuesday. Both sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Police said four other patients were in critical condition and have been transported to area hospitals.

The driver of the second car was treated at the scene and released, officials said.

The Pasadena Educational Foundation will be accepting checks, Orona said, advising donors to notate “Escobedo” in the memo section so the donation goes directly to the family.
