Pasadena resident Sandra Chen Lau, a museum executive and non-profit development consultant, announced Thursday that she will run for the Area 1 seat of the Pasadena City College Board of Trustees in the election on June 5th.

“I’m proud to be part of a generation of women stepping forward to provide new leadership. I decided to run because I believe so strongly in PCC and its mission,” Chen Lau said. “I’m an example of a student whose life was turned around by community college, and I want future students (including my own two kids) to have the same opportunities I had – or better!”

Chen Lau praised PCC as an excellent school, but also said it has serious problems.

“Yet another President resigned recently. We’re now looking at six presidents in less than ten years – seven, if there’s another interim appointment! Meanwhile, the college was recently on academic probation for two years, at risk of losing its accreditation,” she said.

Chen Lau said that as a Trustee her goals would be to work to rebuild campus morale and stability, to focus on success for all students – including returning veterans, and to build for the future within a strong framework of fiscal responsibility.

“I am well-prepared to address these issues and to provide the leadership PCC needs. For over a decade I worked in higher education, helping run successful development campaigns at UCLA, USC and Pacific Oaks College. I currently serve on the PCC Foundation Board, and on PCC’s Pacific Islander Advisory Council. I’m also Associate Vice President of the Japanese American National Museum and serve on Pasadena’s Northwest Commission,” Chen Lau said.

Chen Lau published a list of more than 50 area residents she said endorse her for the seat.

On the list are for former State Senator Dr. Jack Scott, Pasadena City College President, Retired and former Chancellor, California Community Colleges; State Senator Anthony Portantino; former State Senator Carol Liu; Assemblymember Chris Holden; Anthony Rendon, Speaker of the California State Assembly; Bill Bogaard, former Mayor of Pasadena; Pasadena City Council Member Margaret McAustin and former Pasadena City College Board of Trustees member Dr. Jeanette Mann.

“I’m pleased that so many college and community leaders have already endorsed my campaign. And I look forward to talking with voters about my plans and dreams for the amazing community asset that is Pasadena City College.”
