[Editor’s note: In an earlier version of the story, the witness quoted said that Pasadena police took 30 minutes to respond. Investigating this, Pasadena Now has learned that actual response time was eight minutes. The call for service described a “fight” in progress.]

A screaming man terrorized clients and workers in a Social Security Administration office in Pasadena this morning before a security guard was able to wrestle the man to the floor and restrain him long enough for police to arrive.

” I was afraid for my life,” said Rina Clodfelter, who said she witnessed the altercation.

The man became “very violent” and “was screaming and making threats, kicking rows of chairs over” shortly after 12 noon in the federal offices at 104 North Mentor Avenue near Union Street, Clodfelter said.

Three citizens in the office at the time of the man’s attack were rushed behind the glass doors for safety, Clodfelter said.

“The security guard held down the man … before police arrived. 911 was called several times,” Clodfelter said. “A very scary experience. That security guard was a true hero.”

Lt. Tracey Ibarra confirms that Pasadena police officers responded and detained the man subdued by the guard.

Ibarra said the security guard was injured in the altercation.

Because the attack took place on federal property, Pasadena police detained the suspect until Department of Homeland Security police could arrive to make an arrest, Ibarra said.

The suspect is known through prior contacts to one of the Pasadena officers who responded to the scene, she said.

Clodfelter said a woman in the office at the time of the attack took cellphone video of the attack, but federal officials told the woman that “recording was not allowed. Her phone was confiscated, to make sure the footage was deleted.”

Clodfelter said both the security officer and the workers at the office itself reacted professionally as the violent situation unfolded.

“Great work on behalf of the employees at this office,” she said.

There is no further information available about this incident at this time.
