Services Announced for Dan Stathatos, Founder of Stats, Who Died July 4 at 91

Dan Stathy Stathatos, a Greek immigrant’s son who founded Pasadena’s iconic Stats Home Decorative Center, died on the Fourth of July, 2015 at his home in San Marino, California. He was 91 years old.

The family announced that services will be held at Saint Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10th.

In his last days, as in the rest of his life, Stathatos was surrounded by friends and family who loved him. To the end, he demonstrated his great determination to live a full and wonderful life, according to those who knew him.

Stathatos was born on November 25th, 1923 in Los Angeles, California, to Dionysios and Diamondo Stathatos. His father was an immigrant who sold flowers at the downtown Los Angeles flower market and later set up a flower store in 1910 that later became Broadway Florist.

At the age of 17, Dan Stathatos was forced to take over his family’s business shortly after graduating from high school when his father died. He had to abandon his plans to pursue a career in architecture.

Stathatos met Beatrice Laura Teresi and married her in 1950. They had four sons, Dan Steven Stathatos, Philip James Stathatos, Michael David Stathatos and Damon James Stathatos. The growing family later moved to San Marino.

Together with his only brother, Savas Jerry Stathatos, Dan ran and operated the Broadway Florist which continued to flourish under their charge, becoming the largest flower store operation west of the Mississippi.

In 1962, Dan Stathatos left the fresh flower business to his brother and opened a store called Stats Floral Supply at 120 S Raymond Avenue in Pasadena. The store in the beginning was tailored towards wholesale and retail florist supplies. Over time, it grew into what it is now today – Stats Home Decorative Center, sometimes referred to as the Disneyland of Christmas and seasonal supplies in Pasadena.

Along the way, Stathatos acquired Fishbecks Patio Center just next door. Now, Stats occupies a 32,000-square-foot area on its original location. The store now has three specialty shops – the Old Town Shaving Company, Bea’s Knees Wine, Cheese and Gifts and Sierra Madre Sawing and Milling. His son Damon James Stathos is running the center as general manager.

Dan Stathatos is survived by his loving sons and their wives, his nine grandchildren – Mary, Damon, James, Laura, Michele, Nicole, Dan, Sean and Suzanne – and his two great-grandchildren, Beatrice and Charles.
