Now and Then: Connecting the visual past with the present

Side Street Projects presents Arnold and Crystle Martin’s Now and Then part of a yearlong series called My Pasadena, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and organized by the City of Pasadena Public Art Program in partnership with Side Street Projects.

Arnold Martin and Crystle Martin researched and developed this project to connect residents and visitors to Pasadena’s civic center to the visual past through 3D stereoscopy, allowing individuals to take a step back in time before the middle 20th century to experience unique aspects of Pasadena’s Civic, Cultural and Industrial heritage.

Through three stereo viewers in the historic Pasadena Civic Center, viewers can glimpse 3D images of the city’s past. Each of the images shows a unique take on the life and times of the residents of historic Pasadena over the past century, from its beginnings as a collection of fruit orchards to a getaway for wealthy entrepreneurs and the beginnings of a vibrant Los Angeles foothill community.

The City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division, along with partner Side Street Projects, is the proud recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town public art project award. Pasadena’s project for the Civic Center: My Pasadena will create a continuous series of events and changing artworks from September 2015-September 2016, transforming the Civic Center area into a creative, vibrant public forum and expanding community awareness of and relevance to the contemporary role of government.

Founded in 1992, Side Street Projects is an entirely mobile artist-run organization that gives artists of all ages the ability and the means to support their creative endeavors. The artists at Side Street Projects are social entrepreneurs who work with communities to solve real world problems. They share what they have learned to strengthen the field of artists who work with communities, schools, and organizations. Simply put, Side Street Projects teach artists how to roll up their sleeves and do things themselves. Each year we serve 10,000 individual (adult) artists and over 3,000 children.
