Slippery Court Stops Pasadena-Muir Game

Coaches from both Pasadena High and John Muir High agreed to postpone the two teams’ Pacific League game Thursday night because the heat and humidity caused excessive slipping on the Pasadena High court.

With Pasadena ahead 24-21, the coaches decided to call the game with 4:46 left in the second quarter, making sure safety was more important than the desire of both teams to win, a report on Pasadena Star-News said. It’s not clear whether the game will resume either Friday or Saturday. If it does continue, it won’t have a bearing on league standings.

The CIF Southern Section pairings will be announced Sunday.

When players started slipping about midway through the first quarter, the referees had to stop the game several times so the floor could be wiped up, but that didn’t do much good.

About midway through the second quarter, the referees called the coaches and everyone agreed to halt the game.

Brooks said the slipping could result in serious injuries if they had continued the game. Timothy Sippel, principal at John Muir, took part in the decision to stop the game.
