Smoke coming from an electrical room at a gymnasium Thursday afternoon on the campus of the California Institute of Technology sent a security guard to an area hospital for evaluation and forced rescuers to close the school’s athletic center.
Crews were dispatched about 2:25 p.m.Thursday to the Braun Athletic Center just south of California Boulevard and Wilson Avenue, said Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department.
Derderian said there was heavy smoke coming from an electrical room on the second floor of the gymasium.
“One security guard is being evaluated for smoke inhalation,” she said, adding that the heavy smoke was coming from electrical equipment, but there were no flames.
The security guard was taken to a hospital for further evaluation, she said. The Braun Athletic Center was reopened by 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
