Smoky Air, “Ash Rain” Prompt Numerous Recreational Closures and Shutdowns Saturday

[Editor’s Note: The list of cancelled Pasadena activities has now grown larger. Shortly before noon, Assistant City Manager Julie Gutierrez reported that “All sporting events planned on City fields, all pools, RBAC [Rose Bowl Aquatic Center] swimming, Eat, See and Hear at City Hall, Movies at Washington Park and Levitt Concerts have been canceled for today and this evening due to Air Quality.”]

AYSO soccer officials cancelled playoff games to be held primarily Villa-Parke and the City of Pasadena closed all public pools today as the 11,000-acre Sand Fire near Santa Clarita filled local skies with soot and ash, and air quality grew increasingly unhealthy.

The AYSO soccer games reportedly involved about a dozen matches and about 100 children and their families. The organization cancelled the games and will reschedule them for the future, a Pasadena official said.

The City has responded to the unhealthy air by closing pools.

“All the city operated pools are closed,” said William Boyer, Pasadena’s Public Infornmation Officer. “That’s because of the soot and ash that’s falling. Unfortunately, it comes right at the same time that we’re in a heat wave.”

Boyer also said “all of the rec centers continue to operate under normal hours and if they did have anything outdoors … we’re directing them to remain focused on indoor activities.”

Other organizations may have curtailed activities as well. Repeated calls to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center went unanswered.

“It’s our understanding that other outdoor-oriented organizations are assessing their activities and making their own recommendations, such as the [Roving Archers] archery and the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center,” Boyer said.

Officials said residents should avoid outdoor activity because of the double whammy of high temperatures and “moderate” air quality.

The Air Quality Management District said shortly before noon that “persons with heart or lung disease, children, older adults, and people who are active outdoors may be sensitive and therefore at greater risk. People in the sensitive groups should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.”

“Do not exercise outside for a few days due to ash and high heat. Air quality is already bad and now confounded by ash and smoke,” said Pasadena Fire Department spokesperson Lisa Derderian. “Keep pets inside if possible and clear away remnants as soon as it stops.”

The National Weather Service said that anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location and bystanders should call 911.

“Never … ever … leave people or pets in enclosed vehicles, even for a short period of time, the advisory cautioned.

The Southern California Air Quality Management District advised residents to “keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one and keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. Avoid using a swamp cooler or whole-house fan to prevent bringing additional smoke inside.”
