Students at San Marino’s Southwestern Academy prep school treated to a special end of the year Luau themed party Wednesday filled with traditional island themed food, music and games.

The annual party is a collaborative effort between staff and the school’s International Club that brings different parts of the world to campus, much like the multicultural student body who come to Southwestern from all over the globe.

“This is a school tradition mainly for the students, as a break from all of their hard work and studying as a reward to enjoy an evening that brings a feel of cultures from places like the South Pacific and Hawaii,” said Southwestern Academy Teacher Johan Cordero.

Island themed games included limbo equipped with bamboo posts, a two story water slide, a coconut-can-throw competition and a traditional pie throw–a school tradition where students get to lob whipped cream pies at teachers.

“Every year is fun. This is the time of year for us to relax so I know we all look forward to hanging out with each other and just have a good time before the school year ends next month,” said a Southwestern Academy student and I-Club member.

The luau was complete with catered food that included Hawaiian pigs, fried rice, chow mein and a special ceremony from both fire and hula dancers.

Southwestern’s vision is to offer American and international students personalized, stimulating classes and supportive, nurturing care that allows individual student success, understanding of diverse cultures, and preparation for college and life.
