Special Public Safety Meeting Called, Will Examine Recent Gang Violence, Solutions

A special meeting of the City’s Public Safety Committee has been called for this Thursday at which Committee members will hear from Police Chief Phillip Sanchez about the recent wave of gang violence and his Department’s “Violence Reduction Efforts.” The meeting will also examine possible solutions to the local violence.

Since December 22, Northwest Pasadena has seen three homicides in shootings which also sent three people to local hospitals in what has been described as a gang rivalry between a local gang and another based in Duarte.

On January 13, City Councilmember and Public Safety Committee Chair John Kennedy convened a meeting with civic leaders and community members to brainstorm ways to address the violence.

At Thursday’s Public Safety Committee meeting, City Manager Steve Mermell will present a report reviewing city-funded services which seek to engage and serve resident young people — programs Mermell called “critical contributions … to developing a healthy community.”

Mermell’s report is a large compendium of child and youth programs collected from a number of City departments, from the Pasadena Public Library system to sports activities.

Jaylene Moseley, President of the non-profit Flintridge Center, which operates programs for formerly incarcerated, previously gang-involved local residents, is also scheduled to address the Committee.

The public may comment directly to the Committee, shortly after the meeting opens at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers in City Hall, 100 North Garfield Avenue.
