Stark Spirits’ motto is “Strength is in the Character.” Their motto has layers of meaning, one of which is that providing for the good of others is an obligation. Among their first donations to charitable causes, April 2015, was to Project Thirst, an organization that teaches young Americans about the importance of pure, clean water, and which builds wells in remote villages in Africa and South America. Stark Spirits is committed to supporting charitable organizations and promoting community organizations as an on-going practice.

Two upcoming events are on the Stark Spirits’ donation schedule. The first is a fundraiser in support of Wikipedia at the Annenberg Space for Photography on November 15. Wikipedia is one of the most amazing organizations in the nation, having few staff and an enormous network of volunteers. So many people benefit from Wikipedia, but not many contribute to its upkeep. Karen and Greg Stark are honored to show their appreciation of Wikipedia.

This coming December 2, Stark Spirits will be donating to “Sing for Puerto Rico,” which is being at Electric Pony Studios in Los Angeles. It is an event organized to help Puerto Rico recover from the recent devastating Hurricane Maria. That hurricane scourged the Caribbean from September 16 through October 5 of this year. Puerto Rico is almost in ruins as a result. Of course Hurricane Irma had just passed by, causing a good amount of damage itself. Very little and poorly coordinated aid has been provided to Puerto Rico, despite the fact that it’s an American protectorate and all the citizens are Americans. This inequity has distressed Karen and Greg, and they are more than happy to donate their spirits to “Sing for Puerto Rico.”

Stark Spirits was out in the community often this past September. On September 2, Stark Spirits donated Silver Rum and California Single Malt Whiskey for the Pacific Oaks College Housewarming Celebration. The festivities at Pacific Oaks were a celebration of the college’s purchase of the location where it has been for the past 13 years. Karen was delighted to have the opportunity to make the donation. She received her MA in Human Development from Pacific Oaks. It was a life-changing experience that set her on a path of service for over 30 years in programs and agencies that supported children, parents and family life. Now in her second career as a distiller, she could give something to express her gratitude.

Stark Spirits has tours and tastings at their micro distillery every Friday and Saturday from 2pm to 6pm, but they also do tastings to support community events. A tasting event is not a donation, but it supports the organization and promotes the businesses that participate. Win-win! Stark Spirits participated in the Taste of Arcadia 2017, on September 25. This event was organized by the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce to promote Arcadia as a great place to do business. Over 45 local businesses participated, offering tastes of food and beverages to a crowd of more than 1500 people. Stark Spirits, a member of the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce, had a very busy night and a very good time.

Next on Stark Spirits’ list of community events which they supported was the 2017 Taste of Pasadena, this past September 28. Taste of Pasadena was held in the staging area of the Rose Bowl, and it attracted a jovial crowd. This was the second time Stark Spirits had provided spirits for tastings for Taste of Pasadena. Karen and Greg found it gratifying to have people from 2016 tell them they had patronized local retailers in order to enjoy Stark Spirits all year. As members of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, Stark Spirits enjoyed the opportunity to support the Chamber, its members and the City of Pasadena.

Stark Spirits is a “patron of the arts,” having sponsored several events in the performance arts. These include the Grammy Foundation Don King Retrospective, Edgar Arceneaux’ s very moving stage play, “Until, Until, Until…” and Annie Lessor’s pop-up ABC Project, that utilized their distillery for “D.” More recently, Stark Spirits donated product to the Marina Del Rey Film Festival, which took place October 1 through October 4.

Pasadena’s only micro distillery, Stark Spirits is also one of the smallest distilleries in California. Rather than attempting to provide tastings for the anticipated bare minimum of 4000 attendees over the four days, Stark Spirits donated bottles of their award-winning California Single Malt Whiskey, California Peated Single Malt Whiskey and Sunshine Orange Brandy for the festival’s raffle.
