Friday night’s loss to state No. 10-ranked and South Coast Conference leader El Camino College was not the first time the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team got swept in a home match. But rarely has a Lancers’ team been dominated as it had in the final two sets of a 25-19, 25-7, 25-10 defeat at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The last time a PCC team was held to under 10 points in a set at home was Sept. 8, 2006 against Orange Coast. The overall 36 points scored by PCC is the least by a PCC team this season, and the lowest recorded at home since the H-P Gym was opened in 1999.

After playing reasonably well in the opening set against the talented Warriors (15-2, 7-0 in SCC play), the Lancers unraveled in the second set. However, the third set turned into a true nightmare as PCC led 9-7 before El Camino outscored the Lancers, 18-1, to close out the 53-minute affair.

PCC’s kills leader was Lahiz Longobardi with five as the team scored just 16 kills in the three games. Libero Sabrina Takeuchi had 13 digs. Middle hitter Chy’annea Hodges, credited with only one block kill, made a bevy of in-play blocks for the Lancers against a relentless El Camino net attack.

Nicole Echeverri led El Camino with 15 kills.

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, the Lancers (3-11, 3-4 in conference) go back to action in a SCC match at Mt. San Antonio College. First serve is 6 p.m.
